Abstract: Bluetongue virus serotype 8 is a midge-transmitted, non-infectious disease which first appeared in Northern Europe in 2006. The animal health divisional office of the Ardennes (08) department in France designed a form which vets working in this department could use to report their observations. Using data obtained via this form, morbidity, mortality and case fatality rates were calculated and symptoms recorded. Morbidity rates were 2.6% for cattle and 3.8% for sheep. Mortality rates were 0.18% for cattle and 1.8% for sheep. Case fatality rates were 6.9% for cattle and 48.3% for sheep. Vets reported similar clinical signs in both cattle and sheep, although they did appear to vary in the latter according to the flock's official disease status.
