In order to evaluate the influence of limb deformities on the osteoarticular status (OAS) of horses, 225 foals in France were examined 3 times between birth and 6 months of age in 2002-03. A radiographic exam was performed at weaning. Limb deformities and radiographic lesions were quantified and compared using a correlation analysis. It was shown that the prevalence of limb deformities decreased with increasing age. Limb deformities detected during the first exam had no influence on the OAS. On the contrary, limb deformities at weaning were associated with bad OAS. Only 31% of radiographic lesions and limb deformities were situated on the same limb. These preliminary results show that limb deformities and osteoarticular lesions in foals are not correlated. Both are considered as risk factors for developmental orthopaedic disease on the affected limb or on the other limbs.
