This is a German translation of a book originally published in French in 2002 (Tests hormonaux. Explorations fonctionnelles en endocrinologie des carnivores domestiques). It is in 3 parts, the first of which covers fundamental aspects: methods of measurement; interpretation of test results; and choice of endocrinological tests. Part 2 (pp. 23-176) describes the investigation of the most important endocrinological diseases of dogs and cats, divided as follows: thyroid gland; adrenal gland; endocrine pancreas and the APUD (amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation) system; testes and ovaries; antidiuretic hormone; growth hormone; Ca and P metabolism, and it concludes with a section on endocrinological tests in the ferret. The final section deals with endocrinological tests for the most important clinical lead symptoms: polyuria/polydipsia; polyphagy; overweight; insulin resistance; behavioural disorders; hereditary bilaterally symmetric, non-itching alopecia in the dog and cat; and growth disorders. Each of the sections within the 3 parts concludes with a short bibliography of selected references for further reading. There is a table listing the reference values for the most common hormones, and there is a good subject index.
