During a three-year study (1997-1999) in 28 horse breeding farms of Western France (Basse-Normandie), the growth of 439 foals from birth up to 2 years old has been followed. Three breeds were represented: French Standardbred (40 females and 34 males), French Standardbred Trotter (128 females and 113 males) and Thoroughbred (53 females and 49 males). Each foal was measured, on average, 4.1 times, giving a total of 1750 body weight measurements. The body weights and growth, represented by the measurement of body weight (BW, kg), height at withers (HW, cm), and chest girth (CG, cm) are presented .The prediction equation for body weight was calculated using these parameters, and age (in days). Separate equations for males and females are presented, for each breed and for the three breeds combined.
