AB: Nutritional or infectious agents may cause neonatal diarrhoea. The important infectious causes are colibacilli, clostridia, Salmonella organisms, rotovirus and cryptosporidia. The symptoms and postmortum lesions are non-specific. Laboratory tests are essential to establish the cause of neonatal enteritis, which is often multifactoral. The treatment and above all prevention must affect the whole herd. Methods for medical prophylaxis exist for several diseases, however hygiene measures and the management of risk factors are the mainstay of prevention.
