Titre anglais : Osteo-articular status of high level endurance horses

Abstract: The radiographic files obtained on 58 Arab or part Arab endurance horses and 58 Selle-Francais jumping horses were studied. The distribution, the number and nature of the radiographic findings, the radiographic scores and the distribution of horses depending on the radiographic category were compared between both populations. On the investigated horses, radiographic findings are quite rare (less than 50% of the subjects affected) and not too severe. The radiographic score is significantly higher in endurance horses than in jumping horses. Endurance horses are more frequently affected on the front fetlock whereas jumping horses present more lesions on the distal sesamoid bone in the front hoof. There is no difference between both breeds for the other joints. In the investigated endurance horses, there is no relationship between the osteo-articular status and the earning in competition. These data show that in both sports, the presence of few radiographic findings not too severe is acceptable for high level competition.
