Abstract : "Temperament" may be considered as inherited, stable traits based on 3 essential dimensions: reactivity, activity and sociability. In the dog, Canis familiaris, "sociability" has been investigated in either during interspecific interactions with human protagonists or with conspecifics. We tested the "sociability" temperament dimension in 40 puppies at 8 weeks of age, and one month later, in presence of the owner. Each 8-week-old puppy was individually tested in a 9 m2 arena. A robot, Aibo© (Sony) was introduced and was remotely controlled in order to interact with the puppy, while the mother was present. One month later, in similar arena, a young adult female dog was introduced into the experimental pen and was free to interact with the same puppy, in presence of the puppy's new owner. The same data were collected during the 2 experiments. Behavioral variables that were analyzed were numbers of approaches and withdrawals, contact and growling. A spatial variable, time spent in occupation of the mother's, or owner's zone, was also analyzed. There was a significant correlation between the results at 8 weeks with Aibo© and those at 12 weeks with the female dog. These results suggest that even a "dummy dog" robot may be an interesting protagonist to reveal the sociability "dimension" in the temperament of puppies.
