Key points A thorough knowledge of anatomy is required to be proficient at ultrasonographic examination of the proximal suspensory ligament. All modalities can contribute valuable information about osseous lesions at the attachment of the suspensory ligament on the third metacarpal and metatarsal bones. Multiple approaches are necessary to perform a complete ultrasound examination of the proximal suspensory ligament. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will be required to diagnose certain types of suspensory ligament injury.
